Education today is much different than when I graduated in 1965. We didn't have stringent curriculum mandates, multiple course requirements or Advanced Placement (AP) classes. We were pretty much structured into three groups: those who were motivated financially or academically to go to college, those going into the local manufacturing companies or businesses, and those who were going to make it on their own. The divisions were pretty clear even with the military draft looming over us. Those going to college were able to get a college deferment while the rest of us were pretty much guaranteed that a "tour of duty" to our country stood between graduation and our "career's" where ever or what ever that would be.
During this simpler time, we didn't concern ourselves with our ethnic backgrounds. We were all Americans. Didn't understand that there would ever be a dash between someones ethnic background and American. Those students who were black, were still Americans. Those from Asian decent were still Americans. We recited the pledge of allegiance to our flag and didn't worry about someone being forced to say "under God".
We didn't have organizations, clubs or groups based on blood, ethnic or racial backgrounds. We learned to read, write and speak English as "the only language", except for those going to college...they had to take Latin. Never heard one word in Latin ever used in a conversation. Even those with Spanish backgrounds spoke fluent English.
But today it is a much different school. We are so afraid of hurting a students self-esteem, ethnic background and identity. We want every student to succeed regardless of the effort they put forth. We do everything possible to pass a student to the next grade so they can be with their "class" and not feel like a failure. Although we do have dress codes, they are much less stringent than ever before because we still want a student to be able to "express themselves" with their individuality. Today, we believe every child must go to college and become a productive citizen to society. As a result we either lower our standards to the lowest common denominator while, at the same time fail to challenge those students who excel in the classroom. In the end, we do no good to anyone.
We make every effort to educate students to the evils of tobacco, alcohol, sex and global warming. We try to teach the importance of being politically correct so as not to draw attention to the reality of life in the real world. We no longer accept the responsibility of having an opinion and putting your name to it. To be able to take a stand without taking the responsibility for it is the norm today for people. Any accident or misfortune becomes the fault of someone else. If we are late for school, it's because Mom didn't wake me. When you become a teenager, there are certain things that you need to be responsible for. In a nutshell, we end up "dumbing down our kids" and creating a generation of irresponsible young people in the work place and in life.
At the age of 64 and spending many years in "life", I am going to give you some advice. You may or may not like what I am telling you, but these are the realities of life after school. I don't expect you to agree with me because you haven't been there yet. But if for no other reason than to humor me, take a moment and read the following and keep these in the back of your mind.
(1). In the real world life is not fair. There will always be favoritism, nepotism, and people who want to take advantage of you and your good nature. Be ready for it, understand it and get used to the fact that life is not fair.
(2). Your boss will be tougher than any teacher you have or will ever have. He or she will not care about your self-esteem. Unlike your teachers, your boss does not have tenure to secure their job. They keep their jobs based on results of those who work for them. They demand results, not excuses. If you can't perform, they will not give you a "C" or a "D-"; you will get an "F" and a chance to go to some other employer and look for work.
(3). In the real world, life has winners and losers. Unlike school that give you many chances to advance so that everyone is a winner, in life you will not always win. In school we pass students so as not to hurt their feelings. We allow multiple Valedictorians because we don't want to create a "winner take all" situation which will challenge our top students. Your school may do away with winners and losers....but life hasn't. Your boss in the real world may not care about your self-esteem....they care about your performance. People will expect you to accomplish something before you can feel good about you. So when your inflated ego meets reality, don't go yelling that "life isn't fair". (see #1)
(4). Unlike school, life isn't divided into terms, classes or extra credit. You will probably not get summers off unless you become a teacher....then you will be required to go to school, get a job or pick up additional teaching hours to help pay your bills. In business, you will be expected to be at work every day for a minimum of 8 hours, and arrive on time ready to perform your job. You won't get a new lease on life in the next semester. The job goes on and on every day. No Easter or Christmas vacation to unwind after tests.
(5) Sorry to tell you that you will probably not make $50,000 a year right out of high school. You probably won't become a Vice President or have your own personal secretary. You may have to wear a uniform that doesn't have GAP or IZOD on the label. Remember that "flipping burgers" should not be below your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping type jobs.... They called it an opportunity. They were not afraid to work for minimum wage. They would have been embarrassed to sit around all day talking about American Idol, Survivor, reading People magazine or socializing on facebook.
(6). In life, if you screw up, it's not your parents fault, or where you came from, or any other lame excuse. It will be your responsibility. When you turn 18, you will be responsible for your actions, it'll be on your nickel.
(7). In life, problems are not solved in 30 minutes, including commercials. What you see happen on TV is not the real world. People actually leave the coffee shop or diner and go to work. Serious problems will not be resolved like CSI by beautiful women or handsome young men. They will be resolved by those who you choose to help you. Generally, that will be your boss or fellow workers...and they are not a perky as Jennifer Aniston.
(8). Purple hair, earrings (except for women, and then only one in each ear), tattoos, smoking, chewing, pants around the bottom of your butt and other "fads" make you look stupid. They may look cool to you and heighten your self-esteem. To your boss you are not cool. You look stupid. If your employer deals directly with the public, your employer will not share your "coolness". In fact, regardless of your qualifications, you probably will not go to work for them. Their customers have certain quirky feelings about purple hair, earrings in men's ears, nose, eyes, and other locations, smoking or chewing on the job, and customers really don't want to see your underwear. Dread the thought of being uncool! Please understand that it is the customer, not the company, who pays your salary. If the customer doesn't return because of you, then you may not get any pay. But then again, you probably won't be hired by many businesses looking "cool" or "just expressing my individuality". Your boss doesn't care about your individuality...they care about your performance and profit.
(9). Always be nice to those who may not be "cool" or share your views or may not have been the BMOC (big man on campus). That nerd you teased in school may turn out to be your boss.
I just had a few thoughts to share. Some of these I learned for myself by experience, most my grandfather told me and the rest are just a matter of common sense, hygiene and personal pride. You see, life is not fair and the government will not make life better. Be a responsible American who stands up for what is right, knows what is going on in government, have personal pride in yourself, respect for others and be willing to accept criticism, learn from it and become a better productive citizen as a result. If you start your own business, there will be twice as many rules. Good luck, have fun. Life may not be fair, but life is enjoyable if you want it to be....considering the alternative.

Response to mold issue article of August 12th.
Once again, I come with responses to articles from the Springfield News-Sun concerning the Northeastern Local School District. These responses are from the article dated August 11, 2010 Megan Gildow's article "Mold found in 10 rooms at Northeastern High School". Unlike previous comments and questions, I will respond to those that are legitimate and not redundant or argumentative.
As always, I am speaking on my behalf, not the board's. I recommend that the reader validate my statements so as to ascertain that I am responding with the truth.
Concerning one comment from "yeah right:
"Mr. Kadel I have heard one tirade after the other. No matter what anyone says on this thread you are going to say they are wrong! Well I have a question for you to put on your little blog. What makes your comments anymore closer to the truth than any of ours? You are not a god or are you anymore perfect than any of us. I am so sick of you coming on here scare tacting these folks with your blog. You can spout anything you want sir but the proof is in the pudding. Sale all you want were not buying
Yeah Right!!!"
What makes my comment closer to the truth is being involved with the district for the past twenty years, questioning why things happen, investigating the events, learning how things work in public education and listening. I am not an ogre who "scares" anyone. I have the courage to give my name knowing there are those who can easily question my information without being accountable for their comments. It is called responsibility, accountability and integrity.
This is what I've tried to maintain throughout my time with the district. I don't ask anyone to believe what I say. I only ask that you question my responses, research my comments and judge for yourself.
With this being said, what follows are responses to the comments.
"dont worry n/e hs im sure a levy will someday pass so we can build new schools. first class rooms in hallways now random mold. tell me why i moved to this district again?
holly
6:50 AM, 8/13/2010"
holly: thank you for your response. We cannot put a levy on the ballot in November because there is not enough time to put two resolutions together for the levy. I hope you moved to this district for quality education. There is no reason that you can't continue to expect quality education. Failure of the levy doesn't change our commitment to educating children. The levy was an opportunity to fulfill a need. The board will be discussing the next step for the district at our board meeting on Monday evening. I hope you can come and be part of the discussion.
"Why did it get that bad in the first place? Ever hear of DE-HUMIDIFIERS? Could have used the money ya spent on the SPECIAL ELECTIONS!!! One more reason I didn't vote for new schools! TAKE CARE OF WHAT WE HAVE!!!
think about it
6:52 AM, 8/13/2010"
think about it: thank you for your comment. There were several factors that caused this situation. First there were de-humidifiers that malfunctioned. Secondly, the humidity during the heat wave for several days didn't help the situation. This would have occured if the levy had passed. We will be discussing this issue and others at our board meeting on Monday evening. Hope you can attend and be part of the discussion. We will appreciate your input.
"just a thought, why wasn't the mold problem taken care of as soon as it was noticed? I am sure you would have addressed it immediately if it were your home!! I am not so sure this is all about the safety of the kids and more about just trying to get a newer school than Kenton Ridge. The district needs to hire maintenance people instead of janitors.Having a maintenance crew could address the concerns immediately and take care of them instead of waiting until it too late to fix.Just a thought!!!!!

7:24 AM, 8/13/2010"
concerned citizen: thank you for your comment. It was taken care of when it was discovered. The rooms had been cleaned, however, the heat, humidity, failure of the de-humidifier to dispel the humidity caused this problem. We did respond immediately upon the problem being discovered.
"There is a board meeting at KR this coming Monday evening starting at 6:30 PM. I'm going to be there and hope all of you "informed" people will come to share your "wisdom", ask questions and inform the board as to what the "facts" are about this district. The wealth of "knowledge", intelligence and integrity displayed in these comments is overwhelming. Maybe we can top 260 comments!!!!

"If you don't think this story has connections with the failed levy your head is in the sand. They could have handled this in house but they wanted the publicity of calling the CCCHD. It is a slap in the face of their janitors.
ray
7:52 AM, 8/13/2010"
ray: thank you for your comment. I can tell you that this has nothing to do with the failure of the levy. We don't need the publicity. Calling CCCHD is a requirement when dealing with any situation that is a health hazard. Failure to contact CCCHD in this problem would be very irresponsible on behalf of the administration. I don't believe any janitor was "slapped" in the face. The problem was due to the de-humidifiers malfunctioning and the high humidity from the recent heat wave we have been experiencing.
"sure is funny how all of sudden you discover mold after maintance and janitors have been there all summer long and you call the ccchd right before school.you the board just wanted to start something again.give it a rest and get in there and do your job that you are paid highly to do.
give it a rest
8:33 AM, 8/13/2010"
give it a rest: thank you for your comment. As I have stated, the problem was caused by the de-humidifiers malfunctioning. Timing couldn't have been worse with the start of school. We are working on getting the mold cleaned up before school begins. The board or district has nothing to gain from this situation. The board gains nothing from "starting" anything. The board is not "highly paid". Do you know how much we are compensated to be a board member? Please check this out, you may be surprised.
"I think the theory was mold = bad environment = yes vote = new schools.
math wiz
8:33 AM, 8/13/201"
math wiz: thank you for your comment. We lost the opportunity for new schools due to more no votes than yes votes. There is no more guaranteed money for NELSD. This situation will not calculate your statement.
"Obviously, Tecumseh taxpayer you need to read the article again. You state that mold doesn't just appear at these levels....what levels??? Have you seen the level of mold in NE???? Please be CORRECTLY INFORMED before you spout off. The article does state that the mold level was not so severe that it could not be cleaned up in house, etc., Northeastern does not need more ignorant, uninformed people spouting off! Oh...and by the way, I do believe voting was over when this article was written
tired of ignorance
10:42 AM, 8/13/2010"
tired of ignorance: thank you for your comment. You are correct. The vote has already been taken and the people opted for no schools. There is no more guaranteed money available. The voters do no want new schools. As you stated, this situation didn't occur over a long period of time. Conditions such as high humidity, malfunctioning de-humidifiers closed up rooms and mold grows pretty rapidly.
"Tired of ignorance:Not trying to be disrespectful, but hasn't the levy been turned down 3 or 4 times?Ignorance is bliss, the people obviously are frustrated with the Northeastern district.Maybe if they show that they can take care of what they have, the levy might pass. If you give your kid a car to drive and he abuses it and doesn't take care of it and it breaks down do you just go out and buy him another one? No you tell him if he would have taken care of it,it wouldn't have broke down!

10:53 AM, 8/13/2010"
concerned citizen: thank you for your comment. You should go to the website for the nelsd at www.nelsd.org You will find the voting history of the district since 1969. The history shows there has not been support throughout the past 40 years. If it is the board, then whomever is serving is an enemy of the people. Even cars become old, rusted and wears out over time, regardless of how well you take care of it.
"MAKE THE NO VOTERS PAY FOR THE CLEAN UP OF THE MOLD!!! They didn't want to spend the money on new, mold, asbestos, radon free schools.. so make THEM pay for the cleanup and maintenance of these old crumbling nearly condemned buildings! I voted YES. Why should I have to pay for the NO voter's selfish mistake!?
Yes Voter
10:57 AM, 8/13/2010"
Yes Voter: thank you for your comment and support. The Administration has notified the insurance company for assistance in paying for the mold clean up. It is a result of de-humidifiers malfunctioning.
"There is no MOLD!!! this is just another plan to get my money. Now they will have some special vote to put this levy on the ballet again. This is supposed to startle parents and forcing them to vote yes. I got news for NELSD we are not dumb and will not be treated as such so nice try better luck next time. You disgust me!!!! They just conveniently found this mold right after they lost a levy LMFAO!!!!
Yeah Right!!!
11:11 AM, 8/13/2010"
Yeah Right!!!: thank you for your comment. Personally I can't believe you or anyone would make such a statement in public, of course without using your name to take responsibility. This is no "scare tactic" to get parents to vote yes. You sir or madam are either paranoid, trying to stir up trouble, vastly uninformed or just plain making trouble. Many of the comments you place on this article are representative of any one of the above. If you believe we "conveniently" found mold....what benefit does it provide or our purpose. Personally sir or madam I have enough responsibilities than to "create" another issue. Since you won't give your name, I can't really know your motivation for your comments.
"BLEACH IS A LOT CHEAPER THAN ME LOSING MY HOME BECAUSE OF THE EXTRA $350 A MONTH ON MY REAL ESTATE TAXES. A LITTLE ELBOW GREESE HELPS TOO.
LARRY
12:24 PM, 8/13/2010"
LARRY: thank you for your comment. Bleach is cheaper, however, the nature of this issue is one that our insurance company has directed us to utilize proper equipment, solutions, protection and concentrated effort to rid the mold from these rooms. We are taking their recommendation. The CCCHD will be the determining factor to assure our rooms will be available for teaching. I'm a little confused by your going to pay an additional $350 a month on your taxes? This shouldn't cost you any additional money in taxes. Since we have no levy for this and the levy for new schools failed, there will be no additional cost to you.
"LOL I found mold in my house last year. Did I build a new house? NO! I found the problem and repaired it. Did I bother the tax payers for repairs to my home NO! I took it right out of my own pocket. 1:05 PM, 8/13/2010"
Yeah Right!!!: didn't really want to respond to you ravings, however, this one I couldn't pass up. I'm sure if you get mold in your home, the CCCHD could care less, however, when it is a public school who educates many children, it becomes an issue. I am looking forward to meeting you at the board meeting. I hope you will be civil and respectful to me as I am to you.
"Just another occurrence where the NELSB has failed to do its job!!! No levy will change this.
Dave
2:56 PM, 8/13/2010"
Dave: thank you for your comment. Dave, looking forward to seeing you on Monday. I trust you will be there to share how a levy will resolve this issue. How did malfunctioning de-humidifiers be a result of the board not doing its job? Anxious to hear your response.
"Several things have become obvious as a result of this fiasco.
1. Before a new school is built, we must rebuild a positive sense of community. Stop all the talk/ pressure for a new tax levy.
2. The administrators of the schools are completely out of touch. Replace them.
3. Blaming the teachers or the students or the parents makes no sense.
Makes too much sense, doesn't it?
Mac
5:19 PM, 8/13/2010"
Mac: thank you for your comment. Three very good points. Will be looking forward to your name being on the ballot in 2011 for school board. You are correct about needing to rebuild the community.
In closing, it becomes very embarrassing to read some of the comments from people who claim to be from the district. To put these comments in the paper for others to read and evaluate who the NELSD is. We have a lot of problems that need resolved, but unfortunately there are too many who want to be part of the problem....we need people who want to be part of the solution.
As always, I am speaking on my behalf, not the board's. I recommend that the reader validate my statements so as to ascertain that I am responding with the truth.

Responses to July 26th news-sun article
Once again, I come with responses to articles from the Springfield News-Sun concerning the Northeastern Local School District. These responses are from the article dated July 26, 2010 from Megan Gildow's article "Northeastern disputes flier's info". Unlike previous comments and questions, I will respond to those that are legitimate and not redundant.
As always, I am speaking on my behalf, not the board's. I recommend that the reader validate my statements so as to ascertain that I am responding with the truth.
Let me preface by saying the number of comments broke all previous records, therefore I cannot respond to everyone, however, I will respond to those who seem legitimate, misinformed and not factual. There were many that were very supportive for which I commend you for being factual, informed and willing to speak up. I was embarrassed by some comments as they reflect on the character, knowledge and integrity of this school district. To those from other districts, I apologize for the lack of respect shown to one another and the attacks of those who wish not to be informed and respectful. These are not representative of the people in the Northeastern Local School District.
"I'm voting no, again, but that flier was crazy! So much inaccurate information, especially about the 3 month vacation for teachers. Just for the record, teachers are paid for usually 183 days a school year; their salary is distributed over a twelve month period. It is really important that every voter, no matter how you vote have ACCURATE information. Well atleast they spelled everything correctly.
NE Resident
9:33 PM, 7/26/2010"
NE Resident: thank you for your comment. First, I respect your choice and your right to be in opposition. Secondly, I respect that you recognized the inaccuracies in the fliers and the belief that every voter should be informed. I wish I understood your position against the levy, not that I may change your mind, but so I can understand your position.
"I am not a NE resident now but my 2 children did graduate from KR a few years ago. I would take issue with the need to re-build KRHS; a building only @ 30 yrs. old. If that building needs re-built, then someone did some pretty poor planning and wasted a lot of taxpayer money!
Everyone needs to remember that the Ohio School Facilities Commission is NOT about Education! It is about contractors, attorneys, building supply co., etc. making money.
KR dad
10:05 PM, 7/26/2010"
KR dad: thank you for your comment. First, we are not re-building KR. We are remodeling it to accommodate 5-8 grades. There is a difference in the makeup of middle school and high school buildings. Secondly, as far as poor planning, when the building was constructed it was done so for 1976 not 2010. There was very limited technology (if any existed) and it was done much differently than is required today. OSFC is not in the "money making" business. They are the agency created to handle and distribute the tobacco funds for the construction of schools in Ohio.
"Thanks Mr.Kadel for clarifying facts for us taxpayers in NELSD. Maybe if you and other board members had been more cooperative with home owners in this district, previous elections would have passed. That is the issue taxpayers don't believe your facts, don't feel tax dollars have been spent well. And you continue to not understand hardships families face to survive. And to those who might say, "then move" shame on you! Awaiting election outcome.
Lulu51
10:35 PM, 7/26/2010"
Lulu51: thank you for your comment. I apologize if I've been uncooperative with the residents in the past. I have tried to be open, honest and transparent with all business of the district. We make meetings available for people to comment, ask questions and voice their opinion. So often, no one shows up except for those who support the schools. I truly understand hardships as my hours were cut in half from last September until this past April. I am currently on reduced hours where I work and have not had a raise in 4 years. I do understand hardships. As I would state to many who are seeking to try to change the board and the way schools are run.....looking forward to seeing you on the ballot for school board on the 2011 election for board member. There will be two vacancies.
"An intersting statistic would be the present average annual salary of NESD graduates that graduated between 1970 and 2000. Based on the districts inability to pass school levies, I would expect that average salary would be much lower than say Beavercreek, Bellbrook, the Lakotas, etc. Education in this district is a very low priority; and it shows.
Northeastern Grad
10:51 PM, 7/26/2010"
Northeastern Grad; thank you for your comment. You are correct, "Education in this district is a low priority" for many until they are directly effected.
"i believe that mr kadel is not looking at the TOTAL cost to the homeowner - the figure of $8000-$20000 is probably NOT FAR OFF THE MARK considering the letter did not SAY YEARLY COST - it is speaking of the overall cost of this levy - which will probably be a great deal more than that when everything is said and done since mr kadel and his board are so negligent about upkeep - replace kadel and his croneys...
concerned resident
6:05 AM, 7/27/2010"
concerned resident: thank you for your comment. Based on the figure of a home valued at $100,000, the cost to a home owner would be $241.00 per year. Over the period of 28 years the cost would be about $6750.00. Yes, there will be those who will pay $8000 over a period of 28 years. The numbers 8000 to 20000 were not questioned as much as the implication many had that this was an annual cost. And yes you may replace me and the rest of the board through a process of recall, or by running against us in the next election. It is unfortunate that more people don't take the opportunity or won't take the chance to make a difference.
"Salary info is online at: http://buckeyeinstitute.org/ What turned people off at first was what "they" wanted not what "we" needed, now it's too late. Clark County has 7 districts with each having Supers,Assist-Supers office staff and everything that goes with 7 districts doing all the same thing. Northeastern has what 6or7 schools? What does a Super do having an Assist-Super and only having 6/7 schools to supervise. They never know any info nor publicize salaries when asked.
itstoolate
6:50 AM, 7/27/2010"
itstoolate: thank you for your comment. All you have to do is ask. The information is public knowledge...nothing to hide. Why don't you come to a board meeting and ask the questions? Why don't you go on line and get the information. It is readily available. Then you will have the information you want.
"putting something on a ballot that must be paid over 28 years is crazy. what happens when and if properity values goup, you will end up paying more. i could see a 5 or 7 year measure, but 28, get real.
jeff h.
6:56 AM, 7/27/2010"
jeff h.: thank you for your comment. Putting a bond issue on the ballot for 28 years is best to keep the cost per household as low as possible. Secondly, if property values rise the schools do not get more money. When you vote certain millage, it is for a certain amount of money. If your property value goes up, your effective millage goes down. The school gets no more money. Likewise if more people move into the district, the schools get no more money. Instead, more families share in the cost of the amount of dollars voted in. Please refer to House Bill 920 for clarification or contact the Ohio Department of Education, your legislator, Auditor or any organization involved in school funding. Ask them about the "reduction factor" from HB 920. If we put the issue on for 5-7 years, people could not afford the cost to their property taxes.
"It is time for new school board members and new administration in the Northeastern District. The ones we have now have lost touch with reality. They have good paying jobs and forget the many of us out here who have lost ours. Most of us cannot afford the extra $300-400 a year that this extravagant levy will cost each family. There will be 2 no votes coming from this household. Please vote no.
JT
7:30 AM, 7/27/2010"
JT: thank you for your comment. Actually the time to replace three of the members was last November when there were three vacancies on the board and only three people ran. The next time will be in 2011 when two vacancies will be available. Hope to see your name on the ballot.
"Northeastern voters need to wake up! This district has a history of not supporting it's schools. None of us want to pay more taxes, but for the future of our children and our community THIS TAX IS A NECESSITY! My last child will be a junior and will not attend the new buildings, but that doesn't matter. What is important here is that the children of this community need to be on the same playing field as those with which they will compete at the college level. PLEASE VOTE YES ON AUGUST 3RD!!!!
Susan Taylor
8:33 AM, 7/27/2010"
Susan Taylor: thank you for your comment. Basically I want to thank you for having the courage to give your name. Thank you for your support.
"The vote is still no,I beleive the imfo passed out is correct. They keep saying only 241.00 on a 100 thousand house, now get real how many are out there at that value so add some more tho that. Also i'm sick of the teachers on facebook trying to get yes votes when the teachers in question don't even live in the district,so they can't vote.they are only thinking of themselves.Add the 241.00 plus over 28years and you'll see the letter is correct.VOTE NO.VOTE NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no no no
8:47 AM, 7/27/2010"
no no no: thank you for your comment. The $241 per year is correct. If you multiply $241 times 28 years you still get $6750, actually $6748.00.
"Why doesn't the district include salary data on all its employees in the little propaganda pamphlets it sends out?
They always seem to be very vague and want to change the subject whenever anyone mentions salaries.
Bo
9:53 AM, 7/27/2010"
Bo: thank you for your comment. Salaries are public record. All you have to do is go to the Ohio Department of Education Website and get any salary you wish. All you have to do is call the board of education office and ask. There is no deep dark secret we are trying to hide. Anyone who has asked me, I will be more than happy to get them the information.
"I am tired of hearing about this in the Paper, Internet, signs & Meetings everywhere. NELSD Guess what? You Failed @ The Levy and Your Failing @ Life, Get new Administration and a real plan and maybe youd get some "YES" votes. Im just Sorry All the Kids have to suffer cause you Dont know how to do your jobs Effectively.
Tired of NELSD
10:22 AM, 7/27/2010"
Tired of NELSD: thank you for your comment. I am looking forward to you running for the board of education next election in 2011. You will then be able to make the difference you want to make and you can do the job effectively.
"Thank you I can help,I to have a smile on my face. It's not a matter of I HAVE to stay in my home,it's a matter of I want to stay in my home.Kids are a concern to me and I supported the school for a good number of years and now being on a fixed income it is time for others to support there kids.I feel a person that has worked and now is retired that payed all those years should be taxed different once they have no children in school. But then anything I say you will not agree with,my vote is NO!!
NO NO NO
10:46 AM, 7/27/2010"
NO NO NO: thank you for your comment. Unfortunately in Ohio, this is how the process works. I agree with you since my kids are also grown and on their own. However, in this state schools are partially funded by property taxes. Senior Citizens do get the Homestead exemption of 25%, however, part of the process is sharing in the funding of schools. If you don't like it, please help to change it. Don't jeopardize the children's education.
"I'm tired of hearing about our property values going down...if our property taxes keep going up we will not be able to give our homes away. If our schools are so bad, why is KR rated an excellent school. Thank you to some great teachers for that, not the surroundings. Remember, if the levy passes then we need an operating levy...just ask Mr. Kadel about that. If you're smart you will be putting money away for your child's college education. Now that's investing in your child's future!!!
Northridge Resident
10:57 AM, 7/27/2010"
Northridge Resident: thank you for your comment. I agree that KR is rated excellent. It is largely due to excellent teachers. Put those same teachers into schools with technology, better security, better facilities and see what will happen. And yes, we will be needing an operating levy at some point in the future. It will be a result of inflation and the state cutting education funding. This has never been denied. In fact we've told people this at all of our Community Meetings. Before planning your children for college, you had better be sure they can compete in college by getting a quality education in high school.
"For a School district that is so in need of money, they sure have the $$$ to waste on levys and meetings, those things arent free, and all the Represenitives from the schools that attended the meetings also put time sheets in for their time to get paid for the meeting, If theyre so proactive and for the school passing the levy then why didnt they help the school save some $$$ by volunteering their time to answer the residents questions??
FACT
11:00 AM, 7/27/2010"
FACT: thank you for your comment. Sir or Madam......I hate to tell you that those school administrators, teachers and staff who attend board meetings do not get extra pay or fill out any time sheets. Board members get $125.00 per board meeting that is used to offset our expenses throughout the month for travel, being inconvenienced when we are out to dinner with our wives and someone has a complaint, when we are home and the phone rings at dinner because someone's son isn't the starting player on the team and they want the coach fired, when we get a call late at night because some child has been injured or worse in a wreck, when we have to go to Columbus or Washington DC to discuss educational issues with our legislator and have to take personal vacation from our regular job....should I go on? No we do not get paid to attend community meetings and take verbal abuse from people who refuse to listen to the facts or want to accuse us of wasting money without providing any specifics. I guess you hit a nerve.
"I am voting No on the Northeastern School District Levy, there has got to be a different way to find our schools with property taxes. Its getting ridiculous.
Iron Maiden
11:13 AM, 7/27/2010"
Iron Maiden: thank you for your comment. I totally agree. Since I've served on this board of education I've been to Columbus regularly to discuss school funding with our legislators. We need people who are willing to stand behind me and other board members across this state and demand something be done or else get new legislators. Will you help????? Email me at leonardkadel@nelsd.org
"Beware...the truth is that the levy passing is just the beginning. Once the levy is passed the district will need an operating levy too. They don't talk about that unless you ask them directly. They are devious by omission! Dear NELSD...please put all your cards on the table so residents can make a sound decision based on the TRUTH. I can't afford an operating levy too!
The Truth
11:14 AM, 7/27/2010"
The Truth: thank you for your comment. We have never denied that there will be an operating levy. Common sense will tell you that inflation and the legislature's cutting of school funding will cause it to happen.
"I always vote no for the schools for several reasons. One reason is I cannot afford to pay any more. But I also strongly feel that the STATE needs to fix the whole system. The schools should be supported thru a sales tax so that the burden is spread out evenly. The home owners are maxed out! People who rent should have to help pay for the schools. And the landlords can only charge just so much rent so they get stuck in the middle.
Fix it
11:29 AM, 7/27/2010"
Fix it: thank you for your comment. I totally agree. Fixing school funding will not happen until the people get behind school boards across the state and get the message to the legislature. This won't happen because it is easier to complain and say "we" need to do something, when in fact they mean "someone else" needs to do something. I've been advocating fixing school funding to the Governor, Legislature and ODE since I've been on this board for the past 17 years and can't get anyone to support me by writing letters, calling and emailing those who can do something.
"I am concerned about sending my child to school in this district. Not everyone can afford going elsewhere, but this is serious. My children's safety is being compromised and the administrators and teachers are openly admitting that. There is something seriously wrong with this picture.
wow
2:17 PM, 7/27/2010"
wow: thank you for your comment. I hope you are a registered voter and willing to get out and vote. Security is a serious problem, but unfortunately too many people still live in the 60's when this wasn't a problem
"I did my part I bought a Lottery ticket. Good luck NELSD. But the lotto advertises that they several millions go to the schools, so I helped fund that, and thats all your getting from me. Have a great day
Gift to NELSD
2:41 PM, 7/27/2010"
Gift to NELSD: thank you for your comment. Please understand that when the Lottery first came into being, the Legislature guestimated how much the proceeds from the lottery would be generated. They took this amount away from education and gave it to entitlements such as Medicaid and other entitlements. Their reasoning was that the lottery would help fund schools. They didn't tell the people that they were taking a large sum of funding away so the lottery could supplement education. After many years, the lottery can no longer say it is used to fund education. Please get the facts.
"I was just past South Vienna school and all the parking lots have been newly paved and lined. Now if it is a yes vote, why would you do that when you are going to tear the school down...what a waste of money just like everything else you do.But since the vote will be No...I guess you did the right thing.
?????
3:34 PM, 7/27/2010"
?????: thank you for your comment. This has been in the Permanent Improvement budget for some time. If the levy passes in August, we are still 36 to 48 months before the schools will be completed. The driveway and parking lot at SV is in bad shape and needed redone.
"Mr. Kadel said most of the employees who make more than $60,000 a year are administrators. I went to www.buckeyeinstitue.com and checked two teachers salaries. They each make $73,836.00 a year. In an email I received today about the levy it said there had been no merit increases for 2 years. However, both of the above teachers salaries were increased every year since 2004. Maybe these were not merit increases but cost of living increases--I will vote no on August 3rd.
District resident
3:55 PM, 7/27/2010"
District resident: thank you for your comment. Sir or Madam. Mr. Kadel (that's me) said I didn't have the figures for all of the district when I was questioned by the reporter. I said our administrators fit into the category of those earning over $60,000. If you go to the website of www.buckeyeinstitue.com, be sure you get the figures for our Northeastern Local School District. There are three districts in Ohio that use the name Northeastern Local School District. One is in the Cincinnati area, one is in the northeast part of Ohio and the third one is ours.
"My home is valued at well over 400K in the tax logs - I could sell it for what, maybe 300K on a good day - prices are dropping, but not the tax valuations. This levy would cost me then over 27K over the 28 years - my kids went to private schools so they could get a good education and succeed in college and after, which they did. This pitifully mismanged district has gotten about everything wrong and mishandled each failed levy - each preplaned failure wasted even more money - enough already!
NE homeowner
4:53 PM, 7/27/2010"
NE homeowner; thank you for your comment. I would be interested in hearing more of what we have done wrong fiscally. Please come to the next meeting in August and present your findings so we can discuss.
"Forgot to mention that AGAIN, I repeat that as long as KR, Rolling Hill, Northridge are part of this district, NO VOTES EVERY TIME from me. Southeastern only has 2 schools & do NOT carry the south end of Springfield. Northeastern shouldn't have to carry the north end of Springfield. Overcrowding isn't going to go away til they do away with open enrollment. Only those living in this district should attend our schools. Those people should move out here & pay same as all of us.
Overtaxed #2
6:56 PM, 7/27/2010"
Overtaxed #2: thank you for your comment. Just to inform you about Open Enrollment kids...we get full funding for each one. You are correct about putting information in the newspaper box. Those distributing the information was putting the information inside mailboxes and nailing signs onto utility poles. That is illegal! The information is also false.
"I always vote no. The treasurer makes way too much money with the retire and rehire. She is probably pulling off 165 thousand a year. We also have an assistant treasurer. But I am going to vote yes. This is the same thing that happened when they needed to build KR. If the money goes away, we will all pay more down the road. they did what they said they would. KR will not be torn down. Pay now or pay later. They need new schools, so get over it. then complain about the treasurer making too much.
tea anyone?
7:57 PM, 7/27/2010"
tea anyone?: thank you for your comment. First, the treasurer makes $96,000. The retirement is hers to collect. Just like other public employees, retire / rehire is not illegal. It is also a source of additional funding for schools. Thank you for your support.
"JC, my grandparent was a postmaster & funny only thing that is crime is OPENING A MAILBOX & PUTTING SOMETHING IN IT if you aren't delivering stamped mail. Many political fliers & shoppers & etc do hang on the OUTSIDE of the mailbox. I think u folks against people like us are just P.O. & wished little people like us would just shut up. This is reason I don't attend meetings as I learned years ago, the board don't give a rats behind about those disagreeing with them. Get over yourself...JC WHOEVER
Me again
8:10 PM, 7/27/2010"
Me again: thank you for your comment. I hate to break this to you, but there were many fliers that were put into the mail boxes. These people were caught doing it. We have license plate numbers and pictures. They have been reported. It is illegal. And by the way, I personally enjoy a good opposition. It only proves what people don't know.
"Please quit hiring retirees back. The treasurer is probably making $165 between NE and her retirement. Please give some of our college grads a chance to find a job, they have student loans to pay off. There is something to be said for fresh minds. NE is in a rut with the same old people & the same old way of doing business. The BD & Admin have an alliance that covers for each other at any expense!!! Move out and give our young people a chance. Thanks for your service Mr. Kadel, but you too!
Tired of Retired Rehires
10:55 AM, 7/28/2010"
Tired of Retired Rehires: thank you for your comment. Without getting into a long discussion, let me say that retire / rehire is not illegal. It saves the district money. I do not feel that I or anyone "owes" a new person my job or position, they need to earn it just like I did. As a board member, when I can retain highly qualified, talented, knowledgeable and loyal people for less money I will support it. I'm only one vote. If you want it changed, then you and two others who support your belief, need to run for school board and make the change.
"Do we need an Asst Super, an Asst Treasurer, an HR position. Cut the FAT from the top...too many Chiefs & not enough Indians! Our principals make $90,000 & up. We spend $200,000 on coaching salaries alone. Show us some major efforts on your part to cut spending to a min. before you expect the community to payup! Mr. Kadel what cuts have been made to reduce the district expenses. $48,000 for an HR position could certainly pay for some needed repairs! When times are tough, we must make tough cuts!
Cut Out The Fat
11:41 AM, 7/28/2010"
Cut Out The Fat: thank you for your comment. Yes, we do need these positions for a district as large as ours. With the mandates from the ODE and the legislature, it is necessary to handle all of the reporting and supervising that is required. Cost savings????? Let's start with not filling many positions due to retirement. When Mr. Broderick came in as Superintendent, we eliminated the Curriculum Director's position. This job was absorbed by the assistant Superintendent and from services by the Educational Service Center. We have not paid our people raises in the past two years. When the Springfield City Schools built new schools, Mr. Broderick purchased badly needed furniture from the Springfield City Schools. He purchased around $400,000 worth of furniture for aroung $20,000 (that alone is a $320,000 cost savings! To f
"I would really like to know the total cost to the school district for the promotion of this levy. If anyone would care to share this information I would be grateful. I suspect the money would have gone a long way for repairs. I am sure someone will be happy to answer my question. In these difficult times for all of us every dollar should be accounted for and spent wisely. I hope this is the case.
Just Curious
11:57 AM, 7/28/2010"
Just Curious: thank you for your comment. The cost for the February ballot was $1,000 per precinct. The cost of this levy will be $1000 per precinct. All other costs for advertisement will be paid from community donations and fund raising. I don't know the amount. If you contact Mrs. Linda Jordan, the campaign treasurer, she can provide you that figure. The money donated by the residents and supporters would not purchase the paint for one of our buildings.
"Who are you JC? What's your name? You must be a board member or board employee with nothing constructive to do with your time except watch for comments that don't agee with yours/boards. Life must be good with a job like that! I'm a Northridge parent and I agee we need new schools, but I also feel that the board has NOT made any substantial budget cuts to help alleviate the financial stess our district is experiencing. Show me a sincere effort on better money management and I will vote yes!
What's Your Name JC"
4:43 PM, 7/28/2010"
What's Your Name JC: thank you for your comment. Let me say that JC is a regular attendee to our board meetings. He asks a lot of questions, gets information, checks the facts of what we say, and then questions us again. It is amazing how informed a person can become by fulfilling their obligation as voters in the district.
"I wonder how many teachers in the NESD live in the district and pay property taxes here like the rest of us. I know many are pushing for the passage of this levy. How much will it cost them ?
Interested voter
8:28 PM, 7/28/2010"
Interested voter: thank you for your comment. Very good question. I know there are a lot of our teachers who are graduates of NEHS and KRHS, but I don't know the exact number. Many of our employees are residents of the district.
"Yeah what a great point to bring up, an excellent excuse to VOTE NO. I'm sure the teachers are not paying school taxes which support the schools in their district of residence. Excellent reason to VOTE NO.
Interested Voter
8:45 PM, 7/28/2010"
Interested Voter: again, thank you for your comment. Are you saying that if a teacher doesn't live in the Northeastern district that they don't pay property tax to the district they live in????? How absurd
"I am sure Northeastern and Kenton Ridge High Schools both have Industrial Arts Classes. Maybe the students in these classes could do some of the repairs needed. I am sure the teachers might even do some in the summer months when they have free time. Any takers ?
New Idea
12:14 PM, 7/29/2010"
New Idea: thank you for your comment. Many of the maintenance issues we have require more qualified people to repair or replace the item. It is a good thought though. The only other problem is the time our students are in the particular class. I would rather they get educated and experienced on more modern problems than old worn out ones.
"Greed is right! It's IRONIC that NE only hires 1st yr teachers to save money, but they REHIRE asst supers, treas, principals, librarians, etc. to save money. The community is not stupid. The only thing we believe is they're dbl dipping & living a life of LUXURY! They're no longer VESTED in NE, ONLY in themselves, & they are at the top of the salary schedule...TOO FUNNY! The community wants RETIREES TO GO so NE can start saving money. Savings on your benefits is minimal your salary is killing us!
One Question
12:49 PM, 7/29/2010"
One Question: thank you for your comment: It is better to hire a new teacher with new ideas, techniques and enthusiasm for less money. As far as administrators it is different. There is much more demands on administrators, more skill, knowledge, talent and above all loyalty when dealing in school issues. I can gauarantee the lifestyle of an administrator is more rigid than you think. Please come to a board meeting and address this issue with others.
"They're almost advertising this levy as a sale. It's like buying something you don't need because it's on sale when you can't afford it. AND taking a loan out to get it. You have to pay for it over 28 years.
I agree with Former NE Student. Better teachers are needed, not a new building. And JC, that article is probably written by the government. Think about the people who are going to lose their homes and farms because they can't pay this much extra. Have a heart and use your mind. Vote no. :)
Educated Consumer :)
1:04 PM, 7/29/2010"
Educated Consumer: thank you for your comment. In reality, this is a sale! we get 41% off the price of new buildings. But the bigger question is.....do we need new buildings? Have you been in SV, NR, NE lately? As far as people loosing their farms and homes. Do you really believe that someone will loose their home over an additional $20 a month/????
"ASK MR. KADEL WHERE HE HID THE DOORS AND TELL HIM TO PUT THEM BACK! Where are the doors then? They were there when I was there. Why don't we look at Shawnee? They have an older building from around the same time, and look at their education level! It's so so so much higher than Northeastern! And KR was built in the 70s so it's even newer! I would be more afraid of the teachers molesting your children and not another Columbine. NO NEW BUILDINGS! NEW TEACHERS!
Hey Mr. Kadel!
1:16 PM, 7/29/2010"
Hey Mr. Kadel!: thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, I didn't hide the doors...never had any from the beginng. The doors being discussed are the ones in the SV building and he RH building that was made in the mid 70's as a result of the "open classroom" concept that proved to be a bad idea. We haveput up walls but unable to have doors in these classrooms.
As far as teachers molesting children and another Columbine, I would not want neither.

Responses to July 7th article on NELSD levy
Once again, I come with responses to articles from the Springfield News-Sun concerning the Northeastern Local School District. These responses are from the article dated July 7, 2010 from Megan Gildow's blog titled "Northeastern schedules community meeting for South Vienna". Unlike previous comments and questions, I will respond to those that are legitimate and not redundant.
As always, I am speaking on my behalf, not the board's. I recommend that the reader validate my statements so as to ascertain that I am responding with the truth.

Just a thought - if the building gets built - there will be no funds to operate, according to the current operating budget and current levy. Where do they think this money will come from - another levy or the money tree? Just a thought."
willyd: thank you for your comment. We know that there will be operating money that will be needed to operate and maintain our new buildings. Exactly when we will come to the voters for operating money will depend on several things: inflation, when and how much the state will reduce our funding and when the new buildings get built. New buildings will have amenities that our current buildings don't have such as air conditioning, safety and security devices and equipment that is badly needed, technology, air quality systems that are mandated, and other items that will be realized when the buildings become operational. Failure of the levy will cause us to come to the voters for maintenance dollars to bring our old building up to code for safety and security, wiring for technology and other items too numerous to mention in this short response.

They bull headedly tried to push this through not once but twice with a predictable NO. Now with one chance left and everyone upset they say we are listening to the tax payer / community. Why didn’t they listen first instead of “WE want it,You pay for it”. What’s next if it doesn’t pass, then what?"
no voter so far: thank you for your comment. First, we have never "bull headedly" pushed anything through. Your vote is not coerced nor do we stand at the ballot box and intimidate anyone into voting for or against this issue. We are only citing the facts of the situation and you have the choice to make. I'm certain if you have gone through our buildings you would understand the need. Secondly,if the levy fails, we will probably be coming to the voters for Permanent Improvement levy to bring our buildings up to code and up to date for security and safety items, wiring and equipment for technology and other issues that will allow better education for our children. Also, should one or more of our buildings become in such condition that they have to be abandoned, then we will either have to close the building and move the kids to another building on split sessions or pay 100% of the cost to build a new building. Again, it will be the choice of the voter. You should be at the South Vienna meeting to voice your question instead of hiding behind a keyboard and pseudonym.

NELSD do you really believe you can pass the levy, then come back and ask for more funds to keep schools operating? We, many of the NO voters have tried to tell you we cannot afford more taxes! I feel the levy keeps getting put on the ballot at special elections believing many voters will miss going to the polls. This shows how sneaky the board is. Politics at it’s finest!"
Lulu51: thank you for your comment. There is nothing sneaky about this levy. It has been in the paper, on television, you are seeing yard signs, and notices of community meetings. The board is being up front with everyone who is willing to listen, ask questions and see for themselves. Have you?

NO NO NO: thank you for your comment: If the levy fails, we will have no choice than to fix what we have. There will likely be a Permanent Improvement Levy on the ballot to do the maintenance and upgrades to our existing building. Hold onto your hat when the millage is determined. This issue is not tied to what we want for our children, all caring parents want the best education possible. Right now with record high unemployment numbers and the worry that your job may be next to be cut no one can afford extra taxes right now. The State should extend the date to apply for building funds until our economy is better. The State cannot afford to spend anymore funds either. Right now NE should concentrate on cleaning up their personnel. Teachers who are caught sexually abusing students and rumors that another teacher was caught viewing sexually explicit websites on his school computer twice before being fired does not make me want to give you more money. Clean up your house and then come back to me."
4th generation NE grad: thank you for your comment. I agree with you about the state of the economy and that the OSFC (not the state) should take into account the economy, however, it will not happen. It is the valuation of property that determines when a school district will become eligible for dollars. Unfortunately our number came up at a very difficult time. If you or anyone judges the entire faculty, administration and staff on one or two people, then it is unfair. These personnel have been dealt with properly. Two individuals should not be used to jeopardize the future education of children. I feel this is your excuse for not supporting our educational process.

Why don’t they hold the meeting in the school so everyone can see the horrible conditions that they students have to go to school in? I will continue to support the levy only because we need to have our learn with today technology and we certainly do not have that. We don’t even have the option to have a computer lab not in the library along with another class room and offices. Lunches in the NR school building starts at 10:20 a.m. so they can get elementary school students and middle school students served. How crazy is that when they start their day at 7:50 a.m. and don’t get out of school until 2:15?"
Voter: thank you for your comment. The reason for holding the meeting outside the building is twofold. First the buildings are being cleaned and painted at this time. Therefore the hallways are filled with furniture. Secondly, the buildings are very hot since the fans would not be used due to the noise. Thirdly, Ritchie Bros. was kind enough to provide a nice facility for the meeting. I agree that it would be best to get into the building, however, it would be a difficult time to do so.

Gary: thank you for your comment. This question has been asked of me many times. My reply is simply "be careful what you wish for". Splitting the district is not an emotional thing, it is a money issue. I have a lot of information about splitting the district that would be detrimental to both sides. As far as living in the city limits and in the Northeastern district also is simple. The municipal and school district boundaries are not the same. We have a lot of kids who live in the city limits that also reside in the district. We also have kids living in Champaign County that is part of our district. Boundaries are not similar.

WE ARE DOING THIS ALL WRONG!
I think the residents of Ohio are looking at this "funding of our schools" issue all wrong. As a board member, I hear from my constituents that we need to find a better way to fund schools. As true as this statement is, it's not going to happen. What I am proposing, is to demand that the legislature allow the voters to determine what the legislature will do. Sounds reasonable, doesn't it. Let me digress......
It was explained to me by a State Representative, later to become a State Senator, that the State of Ohio Legislature does three things: educate, incarcerate and medicate. From the Representative’s perspective, these are the three responsibilities the Ohio Legislature must be accountable for in serving the public they represent.
If these issues are their responsibility, then it stands to reason funding these three entities should be done through the taxing of our income, our property, our purchases, in addition to the taxes levied against the business in Ohio who ultimately raise their prices to cover the additional taxes they must pay. Therefore the consumer ultimately pays the business taxes also.
We know that many of those receiving “entitlements” for whatever reason do not pay their share of the taxes in Ohio. After all, they feel they are “entitled” to a portion of my earned income and the earned income of my fellow Ohioans who are the producers of the wealth. Therefore, in order that “fairness” and "equity" is shown to all people, our state government feel it is only fair that those "less fortunate" should be provided subsistence to bring them to a certain level.
I realize the need to give those less fortunate a helping hand to get them through a difficult financial burden, and I have no problem offering my help. However, when I have no choice as to whom should receive the assistance, I get a little disturbed. Why am I disturbed? Because there are way too many who have their hand out who have no intention or motivation to help themselves. Why am I disturbed? Because there are too many incarcerated in "state of the art" prison facilities who wouldn’t spend a day in the schools many of our children are educated in.
When you stop and think about these three responsibilities, how come only educate is the one right that the public votes on? Think about it, when was the last time you voted to pass a levy to build a new jail, federal prison or correctional institution? NEVER! When was the last time you voted to approve your tax dollars going to provide medical assistance to illegal immigrants, second and third generation welfare recipients and those who feel that they are “entitled” to be cared for by the government? NEVER! When was the last time you voted for a school levy to help pay for a child’s education? LIKE EVERY ELECTION!
Why is something as important as a child’s education and the future of our society placed in the hands of voters while, by a simple vote of elected representatives we are forced to pay for first class prisons with all of the amenities of comfort, complete with big screen televisions, state of the art work out facilities, computers, three square meals a day, no responsibilities and no motivation to become a productive citizen.
Why is something as important as a child’s education and future of our society placed in the hands of voters, while, by a simple vote of elected representatives we are forced to continue to provide free medical care and other “hand outs” or "entitlements" to people whose hands have been reaching out for generations and those who are here illegally waiting for the government's (that’s you and me as taxpayers) to produce the money to cover their medical expenses.
For whatever reason (and really the reason is to get votes in order to get re-elected) our state Legislature, both House and Senate members refuse to tackle the important issue of properly funding schools. Why?
They know it is the school boards who will bear the brunt of the criticism from the local voters. It is the school board who votes the resolutions to place levies on ballots. It is the school board who has to respond to the many critics against how schools operate, where the money goes and where it comes from. It is the school board who is the focus of the problems of school funding in Ohio.
They know it is the school boards who have to make education work while the legislator continues to demand more "fairness" and "equity" and "accountability" mandates without the funding these mandates.
They know that eventually the residents will have to pass the levy in order to keep their buildings opened and maintained, to retain quality teachers and administrators and to provide the resources necessary to give their child a quality education.
They know that as long as their constituents refuse to look at education as the most vital part of the Legislatures responsibilities and continue to hold the legislator harmless, our legislature can continue to keep educational funding reform out of the workings of government. Yes, they know that tackling the funding issue will cause them to give a back seat to "entitlements" therefore costing them votes.
So putting things in perspective, maybe we are wrong to demand the State Legislature tackle the school funding issue. Maybe we need to demand that we vote on funding for correctional institutions and entitlements just like we have to do for education. I’m certain school boards will be looked on in a different light. Maybe our legislators can do the campaigning for levies for new jails, prisons and correctional institutions. Can't wait to see the campaign signs "VOTE YES ON ISSUE 24 FOR A NEW PRISON". Maybe our legislators can do the campaigning for increasing entitlements. How about the sign to read "VOTE YES ON ISSUE 13: BETTER MEDICAL CARE FOR THE LESS FORTUNATE".
Let’s put it to a vote! Better yet, let's see if our Legislators have the courage to allow the public to vote on new jails, entitlement programs and education. Then we will see what gets passed.

Once again, I come with responses to articles from the Springfield News-Sun concerning the Northeastern Local School District. These responses are from the article dated Saturday, June 26, 2010 by Megan Gildow, Staff Writer, titled "Northeastern District to hold two informational meetings". Unlike previous comments and questions, I will respond to those that are legitimate and not redundant.
As always, I am speaking on my behalf, not the board's. I recommend that the reader validate my statements so as to ascertain that I am responding with the truth.
"I went to Northridge Ele. in the 70's. 5th grade mixed with high school aged kids is a big mistake. Let kids be kids while they can. Presently, I work in the school sector. Leave well enough enolve.
Lab79
6:17 AM, 6/27/2010"
Lab79: thank you for your comment. Let me first say that grades 5-8 will not be mixing with grades 9-12. This will be regulated through scheduling activities and isolating the two sectors into separate wings. I assume if you work in the school sector, you should be informed about what will be done or at least go to the source to find out how we will accomplish this separation without commenting to the public.

Dave: thank you for your comment. I guess I don't understand your comment about a "cheap tasty dish". Rejecting this levy will only cause the taxpayers to pay for 100% of the cost for new schools at some point in the future. As I've stated many times, the need for new buildings has real for several years. At this time we now have the opportunity for help with the funding. The voters can pay part now or all of the cost later. The choice is up to you. And yes, I am going out of my way to try to get a great deal for our residents and students....that's my responsibility.
"This time I'm voting no just because they do not respect democracy. I've already voted no twice and yet here I am again voting on another new schools issue. Is this really the last chance for state money or will be the next vote they waste my time with ?

John Spoon: thank you for your comment. Sir, I most definitely respect democracy. If the district stopped levies every time the public rejected the levy, we wouldn't have Kenton Ridge HS, Rolling Hills School, additions to Northeaster, South Vienna and Northridge. We wouldn't have new roofs, operating money and quality teachers. Then the people would be screaming for better school systems and educational programs that we wouldn't have because we didn't keep working for our kids and their education.
"NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!!!!!!! They remind me of my kids. How many times do I have to say no before they quit asking? Grow up and face the fact we're not going to pass it!

Tired Mom; thank you for your comment. We will never quit asking until the funding system in Ohio gets fixed. As a board member who constantly questions our legislators to fix school funding. Until this happens, school districts around the state will need to go to the public to help fund schools. I would suggest the average voter in Ohio should step up to the plate and start questioning our legislators as to why they haven't fixed school funding in Ohio. I truly understand your frustration and the frustration of others, however, please understand that the school funding issue is the one thing that is causing schools to go to the voters for money.
"So when the levy for new buildings does fail the district can count on all you NO voters to vote Yes on new money for improvements on the buildings (stuff 30, 40, 50 years old does break) as well as the increase in operating expenses. Utilities, supplies, new technology etc. do increase in cost. Since the district will be "making do" with what it has, you can be counted on for helping out with that right?

a no voter: thank you for your comment. First sir or madam, you don't know my financial situation because I don't work for the district. I work for you. I have a separate job that I get paid from. First, I have not had a raise in 5 years, plus my hours were cut in half from last September until the middle of April. I fully expect my hours to be cut again this coming September through next April. Secondly, the school employees have not had a raise in the past two years. This is confirmed by contract that you can verify through the board office. Finally, Clark County is taxed below the state average. You obviously don't have the facts. Before you make public comments like this, please get your facts together. Your comment is wrong, untruthful and quite frankly, uncalled for. I will most definitely be willing to respond to your question if you have the courage to come to a community meeting or a board meeting and ask the question to me directly.
"yes we will have vacant homes. No one will want to come here because of the run down schools. No modern computers etc. Have you seen the rest rooms in the northridge school We have good teachers but if we do not have a decent school the good ones will not stay. We will have vacant homes and our property value will decrease more. The state will not give us any money if we do not support our community. Why not go to one of the meetings that the school board is offering and talk to them.

Dave: thank you for your comment. Sir, you haven't paid for the last 4 mill levy since 2004! That's 6 years ago! By the way, I know you are smarter than to say something like that. There was no "spin machine" working on getting the PI levy passed in 2000. It was a case of the Clark County Combined Health District having to shut down Northridge school due to the roof problem that was causing severe health concerns for our children. We had similar problems with the roofs at South Vienna and Northeastern. Come to think of it, I don't believe you even lived in the district at the time.....HMMMMMMMMMM
"Once again they are showing just how little they care about the people's voice. They've been told

All we are doing is presenting the facts, the needs and the opportunity that the residents have to do something good for our children's education, property valuation in the district and strengthen the community. You have the right to make a choice. But remember that you have the right to choose, you don't have the right to choose the consequences of your choice. We need new schools now and have the opportunity for the OSFC to share in the cost. Failure of this levy will take the OSFC's share away and the voters will at some point have to fund the entire cost of new buildings.
As always, I am speaking on my behalf, not the board's. I recommend that the reader validate my statements so as to ascertain that I am responding with the truth.

Response to May 19th article
Once again, I come with responses to articles from the Springfield News-Sun concerning the Northeastern Local School District. These responses are from the article dated Wednesday, May 19, 2010 by Bridgett Outten, Staff Writer, titled "Schools will put issues on August 3rd ballot". Unlike previous comments and questions, I will respond to those that are legitimate and not redundant.
As always, I am speaking on my behalf, not the board's. I recommend that the reader validate my statements so as to ascertain that I am responding with the truth.
"I'd say hopefully 3rd times a charm, but aren't we up to like 5 times now? Just a bad time to ask people for money!! Maybe our savior obama will print some more money and send it to us!!
Mark
11:48 PM, 5/18/2010"
Mark: thank you for your comment. Don't know which issue you are referring, however, you are correct that it is a bad time to ask for tax dollars. Unfortunately, the State Legislature has burdened the schools with no option but to seek dollars from the public. The Boards of Education would appreciate you and all voters to start addressing the school funding issue with our legislators.
"When are the SLOW LEARNERS of NESD going to get it through their thick heads - NO MEANS NO. People are out of work and LOSING their homes and you want to tax them more - for more buildings that you will just let crumble into disrepair - no brainer here. Get a new board - that will actually make repairs to the buildings - maybe then something GOOD WILL HAPPEN!!
abused taxpayer
5:59 AM, 5/19/2010"
abused taxpayer; thank you for your comment. I understand your frustration. The district has not allowed our buildings to crumble into disrepair....time and usage has done this. If you feel a new board will keep new buildings new for 50 years and keep up with technology, then you and two others need to run for the board and make it happen. I personally think a lot of GOOD THINGS HAPPEN everyday in our buildings.
"This levy proves how ignorant the NELSD board is . Nearly the same cost for fewer buildings -- good move.
amazing
6:28 AM, 5/19/2010"
amazing: thank you for your comment. Sir or Madam you need to get the facts. The newest plan calls for less buildings and less cost. The original plan was for $111 million for 6 buildings. This one is for $98 million for 4 buildings and renovating Kenton Ridge HS into a 5-8 building. It is also for less years and no income tax.
"My vote is still "NO"...I can not afford to pay over $700.00 a year in property tax at this time. We "all" have had to take a step back and look at our situations and make a conclusion based on our finances and job propects. My husband has worked the same job for over 40 years and not a week goes by, that they don't talk about closing down, or lay off. When the property owners can't pay their share of this levi, who picks up the slack? When residents move out, who picks up their remaing taxes
Cinddy
7:03 AM, 5/19/2010"
Cinddy: thank you for your comment. I too have suffered in this economy by having my hours cut in half for 7 months. I agree it is not easy to cope, however, I realize this economy is not going to continue. We will be better. If the district was not offered the 41% from the OSFC you can be sure we wouldn't be coming to you to build new schools. I do know that at some point in the future we will be in need of new schools and at that point we will be paying 100% of the cost.
"Kadel needs to go. He is so irrigant and a moron as well. I will still be voting no. Seems to me, they really don't know what they want. They've changed their minds so much, I really don't know what they're asking for anymore. And don't tell me to sit at one of those meetings so I can be attacked for voicing my concerns. Seems like you're treated like dirt for having an opinion anymore!!! HA! See if you get ANY more of money!
agree w/ amazing
7:14 AM, 5/19/2010"
agree w/ amazing: thank you for your comment. Sir or Madam getting rid of me will not change the fact that we need new schools and will not change the way our schools are run. I am only one of five individuals who comprise the school board. I am neither "irrigant (?) whatever that means, nor am I a moron. I am an educated individual who is concerned about our schools, have worked hard to see that the children in this district get the best education they can and try to keep the public informed as to what is happening in the district. Secondly, no one has ever been attacked at any board meeting that I have presided over as President. I've been President for the past 15 years which accounts for 142 meetings. No one has ever been attacked for their views. We have allowed everybody who wishes to address the board do so. The board respects all views regardless of the view. You have obviously not been to a board meeting.
"The 7.876-mill, 28-year bond issue will cost $237 a year on a $100,000 home.
28 YEARS!!!!
Hmmmm!
With NO children in school we are paying
$1,823.00 per year to NESD taxes now.
If passed this would increase to
$2179.00 per year.
With hundreds of foreclosures in NESD you want to raise taxes????
Again! "NO"
r u nuts?
10:40 AM, 5/19/2010"
r u nuts?: thank you for your comment. This is the way a community comes together for the better of the community. Even though you have no children - I have no children in the district either - you enjoy the benefits of strong property values largely as a result of the educational system. New schools will make our property values stronger. Old and rundown schools will cause our people to take their kids to other districts. Even good teachers will seek those districts with new schools and improved educational opportunities. Please reconsider your position.
"What do the schools do with the large sums of money they recieve from the lottery? Go to OhioLottery - about lottery - lottery profits - funding by district. Then scroll down to our county for the details. 2009 fiscal yr hasn't ended yet. 2008 yr fiscal N.W. got $609,834.71, N.E.got $1,315,848.85. Spfld City schools got $4,304,259.02. have a nice day
Donna
10:52 AM, 5/19/2010"
Donna: thank you for your comment. You bring up a very valid point about the Lottery bringing money to the schools. Our Legislators spend a large amount of time getting this across to the public about the Lottery helping our schools. The one point the Legislators failed to tell you is that when the Lottery money was going to schools, the Legislature was taking the same amount away from schools and giving it to the many entitlement programs the state supports. Therefore the Lottery money only replaced the money the Legislature took away. Yes, your facts are true, there is more to the story.
"The state government is being compelled by the Ohio Supreme Court to replace buildings in all school districts. If the NE school funding fails, the state will have to pony up the entire amount.
That's my theory anyway.
state will cover it
11:01 AM, 5/19/2010"
state will cover it: thank you for your comment. This is not true. If the levy fails the NELSD loses the 41% to another district. The state has no intention of funding new schools for districts. If the levy fails the residents will pay 100% of the cost of new schools or else let them fall down.
"Surely you realize the number of employees these schools must have to run...that lottery money would pay for salary and benefits for maybe 10% of the schools employees at the most. Lottery money is not the primary income source for schools; its closer to like 5% of the yearly budget. Don't exaggerate as if the schools are just overflowing with money and wasting it all over the place.
it's math
11:02 AM, 5/19/2010"
it's math: thank you for your comment. As with the NELSD, our budget is roughly $35 million dollars. The money we get from the Lottery is roughly a little over $1 million. You are correct in that we are not overflowing with Lottery money. Plus, the Legislature had withdrawn the funds from our funding that the Lottery was to provide, therefore we basically broke even.
"To Karen
Oh ,I'm sure school budgets are cut due to dollars they receive from the lottery.. The state knows the school will just go to the taxpayer for more. That's what the schools do, simply because it's easier to screw the taxpayer than to beat the state. I'll tell them what I tell the FOP when they call... I paid my tax bill, so don't come asking me for more because the state cut your budget.. Now go ask Suckland where your budget went.
jackalope
12:35 PM, 5/19/2010"
jackalope: thank you for your comment. Isn't it time for the people to start addressing their State Legislators on the school funding issue? They are the ones who must make the changes. School Boards members are advocates, however, it takes people who are also voters to take a position on this issue also. Working with board members will make a difference, if you and other voters are willing to help.
"237.00 a year for a 100,000 dollar home. Well guess what, Mine is over twice that. I have a big enough house payment and large enough taxes already. I can not afford more! I am doing well now trying to keep my home and farm to pass to my kids one day. Money is too tight for the community. Please stop hassling those who can not afford more taxes! We simply can not do this! Hasn't this been proven enough already???
enough already!!!
12:43 PM, 5/19/2010"
enough already!!!: thank you for your comment. We are not hasseling anyone. We are simply getting information to the residents of the district. As a voter, you can stand at the voting booth and make your choice with no duress from board members or supporters.
"its almost grimy how they keep trying to get this threw. i am still voting no.if the money went to repair the schools we have i mite vote yes.they just want to keep building new schools and let them go heck.if they get the money they will just want more.worse then feeding a stray cat.i went to KR.vote no.its a replacement levy! not a repair levy.they will keep try to sneak it threw.i will always vote no..i would rather spend my money on getting this voted down then give it to nelsd.
josh
12:56 PM, 5/19/2010"
josh: thank you for your comment. Josh, it is neither a replacement nor a repair levy. It is a Bond Issue. There are differences. If you are a home owner, then spending money to vote down schools will only have a negative effect on your property values. There is no "sneaking" of anything. The newspaper and tv will not allow it to happen. Our objective is to get people informed in order to make an educated choice. If you have children in school then they will not get the educational opportunities they deserve. It is your choice and your community. Choose wisely.
"The outlook of public education in Ohio is going to be very bleek in the future! Gripping to our school boards really isn't going to do any good!! Their hands will be tied because of continued cuts in state funding! Legislators are the ones who should be getting the complaints! Major reform is going to be necessary if our state is going to be able to provide sufficient funding to keep our schools going! Contact your state senators and reps and grip to them!
yes voter
7:02 PM, 5/19/2010"
yes voter: thank you for your comment. Don't know if you are NWLSD or NELSD, but I appreciate your comment. You are absolutely correct.
"Do you really think the state will change state funding for schools as long as the tax payers keep voting yes to tax levies? Those who have suggested calling state rep, have you called yourself and what was the response you received from your rep? Please share your knowledge further with us. We want to be informed. Thanks for your help.
Paris
10:10 PM, 5/19/2010"
Paris: thank you for your comment. Do I think the state will change the funding system? Not at the current rate. I've addressed this issue with Rep. Hackett, Rep. McGregor and Sen. Widener on many occasions. The response is the same: "we've increased funding to schools!" That is not the solution Ross, Bob and Chris.
Paris, I will gladly guide you through the process we need to make happen, however it will take a long time and a lot of people who are unrelentless and serious about getting a solution.
"Here's something to think about??? $1.00 a kid to ride the bus to and from school? Movie night, $2.00 a kid. Any after hour programs or special events $2.00 a kid or just don't have them... If it doesn't have anything to do with EDUCATING a child DELETE IT!!!!!!!! Wanna play sports parent pay the FULL cost. NO MORE EXTRA ANYTHING!
NOWYOUWILLLISTEN
11:13 PM, 5/19/2010"
NOWYOUWILLLISTEN: thank you for your comment. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. Please look at my article on Open Enrollment and see what cutting sports or having parents pay to play option. Educating a child is more than reading writing and arithmetic. The Ohio Department of Education has guidelines and mandates on what school districts must do.
"Enough already: The school provides the cheerleading uniforms, so if your daughter cheerleads for the school, you didn't pay anything except the sports fee we all have to pay. It's easy for all of you to critisize when you don't know all of the facts. We NEED MONEY to run the SCHOOL. It's like trying to keep your car running without any gas, it just doesnt work.

We already pay most of the sports costs. I didn't get any help when paying 900-1000 dollars for my kid's cheerleading uniforms!
enough already
12:24 AM, 5/20/2010"
enough already and get real: thank you for your comments. I combined these comments because the truth needs to be known. First to enough already, this is your choice to pay the outrageous fees for a cheerleader uniform. I've addressed this with other parents about the school furnishing uniforms, however the cheerleaders didn't like the colors the school chose. The school colors for Northeastern is Cardinal and Gold, not Purple or Maroon and Gold. This has been an issue for many years. To get real, I didn't know the school furnished cheerleader uniforms. Possibly the Cheerleaders may have handed their uniforms down to the next cheerleader, but to my knowledge the school does not furnish cheerleader uniforms.
"Those of you who THINK your elected officals are listening about school funding. THINK AGAIN!! They have had several YEARS to resolve this issue but have ELECTED to do NOTHING as it does not benifit them. Most have ELECTED to side step the issue as it is a POLITICAL MINE FIELD. If you want to show them WE want ACTION on the issue VOTE the IMCUMBENT officals OUT!! I believe the newly elected offical might understand what the VOTERS are saying. FIX IT OR GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!!!
DOn
10:24 AM, 5/20/2010"
DOn: thank you for your comment. You are exactly correct. It is way past time to get our legislators to take positive action. It is a Political Mine Field and one they do not want to handle. I will be doing an article on school funding using a common sense approach.
"tom, i really hope you're right. however, i was disheartened last night when i encountered another no voter... who by the way, didn't have the facts. she was misstating so many things. the supporters of this levy need to get out and get the truth - the facts out there! it IS about our children. we owe it to them. i challenge the no voters to walk through the schools they say are "fine".. spend some time chatting with the teachers... get the FACTS!
NE mom
10:43 AM, 5/20/2010"
NE mom; thank you for your comment. Very well stated. As a means of trying to get information to the public on any and all issues in our district I am going around the district talking with groups in Catawba, South Vienna, New Moorefield, Plattsburg and N'ridge to get the fact out. You are right, there is a lot of misinformation being spread around.
"We need to develop a PAC to dedicate funds and effort to defeating the upcoming levies.
The schools continue to waste dollars putting it in our face time and time again - Let's start pushing back!
To NE District voters: Wait until they pass the income tax and continue to ask for property tax dollars too. NOTHING MAKES ME WANT TO SAY NO MORE THAN THE PILFERING OF MY HOUSEHOLD BUDGET.
To hell with Renewals/Emergency Levies - JUST SAY F***ing NO - as in HELL NO
We need to organize the NO's
12:45 PM, 5/20/2010"
We need to organize the NO's: thank you for your comment. using language like this I would not give my name either. As I stated earlier, you have a choice to make at the ballot box just like everyone else. If you can show me where we are wasting money, I will be most happy to look into it and correct it. The Treasurer works for the board of education and therefore is accountable to the board as well as the residents. By the way, you need to understand the bond issue we are putting on the ballot. There is no income tax. Pleaqse get your facts straight before inciting others.
"JC you are very annoying. Are you getting paid for all your vote yes crap your throwing on everyone? Give it up, it's gonna be voted down...for the ump-theenth time!
tired of you
6:13 PM, 5/20/2010"
tired of you: thank you for your comment. I know JC as an individual who comes to the board meetings, asks questions, researches the responses, asks more questions, goes through the buildings, talks with board members, administrators and teachers. He is very informed and as a result supports our district. It is those who are uninformed, misinformed or refused-to-be-informed that are ignoring this bond issue and opportunity. JC is getting no pay for his comments, nor is he employed by the district.
It's like trying to keep your car running without any gas, it just doesnt work.
get real
6:01 AM, 5/20/2010
REPORT ABUSE
